Built up lettering creates a positive eye catching statement. It consists of two main, distinct parts. A face letter and a side return. The face letter is typically a normal flat or built up cut Perspex, aluminium, stainless steel, acrylic or foam PVC letter onto which an edging - or return is bonded. Built up 3-dimensional lettering is a great way to add impact and distinctiveness to your commercial sign. Compared to conventional flush mounted vinyl lettering, built ups and flat cut Perspex letters, 3D Dimensional lettering adds perceived extra quality to any sign.
Lighting
Various methods of lighting can be integrated for a more impressive built up effect , including.
- Full face lit - Face lit built up letters have a coloured Perspex facing letter. This has a light sourced mounted behind allowing the face and return to light up
- Face lit - This type of built up lettering consists of a coloured Perspex face letter with either an aluminium return or a contrast, non illuminating Perspex return. A light source is placed within the letter illuminating just the face and not the return.
- Reverse lit or halo effect - This type of built up lettering lights the area around the back of a built up letter. The built up lettering is usually made from a material that is solid, not allowing any light to pass through the face or returns of the built up letter. This could be a material such as aluminium or stainless steel. Perspex can be used for this type of letter with the correct use of blocking. Halo lettering is usually best deployed on a matte finish background.

If you have looked at flat lettering but want something slightly different Perspex lettering may offer an ideal alternative as they add depth to your sign project. The beauty of this type of lettering is their versatility. You can mount these letters straight onto walls. They can also be mounted onto your frame based signs to give it extra impact. If you are planning on having an illuminated sign these letters can be combined with your Perspex display panels. As the letters are also Perspex they will allow light to shine through when the sign is illuminated.
An extensive library of fonts and typefaces ensures that any letter styling or logostyling can be created and CNC machine routed in any colour.
There are several ways moulded & flat lettering should be installed. The choice of which method is best depends on how you want to use your lettering and where you plan to install the letters.

- Cup & Peg fixings - two part fixing system manufactured from injection moulded plastic. A male stud is cemented to the rear of your moulded letter. A female cup is screwed to your fixing surface (wall, timber board, sign panel etc.) The male stud locates into the female cup and snaps in place. This method is the most commonly used and is fine for flat surfaces that are not easy for vandals to reach.
- Brass Locators - Brass locators provide both strength and durability. The male part of the fixing is cemented to the rear of the letter, the female section is screwed onto the fixing surface. When brought together the two parts of the fixing system are connected by a threaded lock nut which is an integral part of the male fixing. Once again this type of fixing is best used on a flat surface. The distance between the letter and the fixing surface is large enough to allow a spanner to be slid between the two to lock the nut off.
- Resin Fix- If you are installing your lettering on an uneven surface this method is the best to use. A threaded steel rod fixes to the back of the letter using a keyhole system, a lock off nut is used to ensure the letter cannot be lifted off the keyhole after installation. Holes that are slightly oversize are drilled into the masonry or brick fixing surface. The holes are injected with a resin fix adhesive and the letter mounted rods are pushed into the holes. This method is the best choice if vandalism is a factor you have to consider.

Fixing Signage
With all solutions, Edmonds UK provide a fixing template whereby an outline of each letter, the position of each male fixing (or keyhole centre) is marked on the template. Your template is taped to the fixing surface you wish to use. The template needs to be smooth and level. If the template is not smooth or is slightly loose against the fixing surface you may find the letters fixings do not line up precisely with the holes drilled. Once the template is correctly positioned the male marks become the drill points needed to fix the female fixings.
