Examples of Electroluminescence

Electroluminescent Displays

Electro-Luminescence is the technology of displaying moving images on paper thin posters. Unlike back-lit posters it does not need an energy deficient, expensive and bukly light source.

Electroluminescenc is is revolutionising the way businesses can market their message to target audiences.

Any artwork can be animated as per your specification. The panels can be customised to illuminate in any size, shape, colour or sequence.

How Electroluminescence paper works
Electroluminescent Displays, Edinburgh, Glasgow, England, Scotland, UKAn organic phosphor with coloured overlays is sandwiched between two conductors and as the electric current is applied it rapidly charges phosphor crystals which emit visible light.

Paper typically between 0.25mm - 0.5mm.

Electroluminescent media is constructed in 5 layers:
- Clear Graphics layer at the top,
- then Clear Conductive layer,
- Phosphor layer,
- Dark Conductive layer and finally the
- Insulating layer at the rear.

A small power source is required and comes supplied with the poster.

Electro-luminescent Poster Benefits:

  • Electro-Luminescent posters are vibration and impact resistant,
  • Electro-Luminescent posters have an extremely low power consumption - . consuming 75-90% less power than any other point light source.
  • Available in a variety of shapes and sizes.
  • Lightweight.
  • Flexibility - Can be bent to configure almost any shape and design.
  • Strength - Almost unbreakable.
  • Reliability - does not catastrophically or abruptly fail as they consist of millions of microscopic lamps.  (Unlike filament or fluorescent lighting).
  • High efficiency and brightness - Typically 80% of energy is converted to light.
  • Highly visible and can be seen from further distances in darkness, smoke and fog.
  • Low operating temperature - A cold lighting source and has no heat because of electronic luminous emission.
  • Soft non-glaring light which make sit easy to look at
  • Waterproof.
  • Uses no hazardous materials - landfill friendly.
  • Long service life - Over 30,000 hours.
  • Maintenance free.
  • Free Delivery included in price quoted

Electroluminescent Production Process

  1. Consultation and Project Planning:
To fully evaluate client requirements, provide the best solution for the application, and keep ongoing communications throughout the course of the project.
  2. Artwork Creation
Edmonds UK will assist the client in understanding how to maximise the benefits of using EL for their campaign. We will provide electronic files demonstrating the required animation. By working electronically during this stage, emailing animations in the form of .gif files can be very quick, efficient and cost-effective. Once the animation is confirmed by the client, we can build a prototype sign to these specifications.
  3. Pricing Considerations
Costs are dependent upon many variables such as:
    • Size
    • Quantity
    • % Area of Illumination
    • Complexity of Animation
    Example of prices:
*Prices include panels, power inverters and cabling.
    • A4 White sheets (100% lit) @ £54 per unit.
    • A3 White sheets (100% lit) @ £80 per unit.
    • A2 White Sheets (100% lit) @ £121 per unit.
    • A1 White Sheets (100% lit) @ £228 per unit.
    • 6 sheet ( 1.2m x 1.8m) @ £400 - £600 per unit ( depending on % of illumination)
Prices do not include delivery or VAT. There is also a tooling fee or set up charge for the first poster of the run. EG: For A3 tooling is £180.

Therefore, once we provide the client with an animation and have full details of the project, we are able to provide an accurate cost based on the specific customer requirements, together with the delivery lead times.

  4. Prototyping/Sampling:
Prototyping is optional and some customers prefer to go directing into production. Prototype costs vary, depending upon the specifications of the project. Edmonds will provide you with an estimate for prototyping before any work is done. The prototype will take around 2 weeks to complete. It will serve as a "master" proof for final approval and the entire run will be based on the prototype. It is therefore important to ensure that the electronic proofs of the animation are correct prior to proceeding to the prototyping stage.
  5. Production:
The lead time for production will depend on many factors and this will be confirmed upon order.
  6. Delivery:
As soon as we finish production, the foil will be delivered.

Electroluminescent Applications:

  • Outdoor Advertising
EL technology is the perfect solution to bring animation and attention to any outdoor campaigns. Whether advertising on Billboards, Bus Stops, Busses and Taxis, or even Vehicle Wrapping or Fleet Livery.
  • Point Of Sale
Electro-Luminescent technology can be used as a perfect sales tool for any in store promotion. Currently, custom built lighting is expensive and requires maintenance. The use of Electro-Luminescent media allows your clients to create bright, animated Point of Sale graphics at a low cost.
  • Compared to Light Boxes
Conventional light boxes are bulky, difficult to install and require maintenance. Electro-Luminescent paper thin panels are 0.3mm in depth and can produce bright white light to illuminate evenly through your printed media. The flexibility of Electro-Luminescent means that panels can now be bent into shape around circular objects like pillars, posts or standard snap frames.
  • Road & Safety Signage
The crucial element of Road and Safety signs is visibility. Electro-Luminescent is highly visible and can be seen from further distances in darkness, smoke and fog compared with any other light source. This light source is almost unbreakable and produces no glare, making it the perfect option for Road and Safety signs.
